Yes. At HETAI, custom fasteners can be manufactured based on 3D CAD models, especially when the products have complex geometries, multiple features, or precision machining requirements. A 3D model provides our engineers with a clear digital representation of the product and can be used to evaluate geometry, dimensions, manufacturing processes, and potential production challenges.
However, for many custom fasteners, we recommend providing a 3D CAD model together with a 2D engineering drawing whenever possible. The two documents serve different purposes and can provide more complete technical information.
What 3D CAD models can be used for custom fasteners?
HETAI can work with commonly used 3D CAD formats, depending on the project requirements. A 3D model can clearly show the overall geometry of custom bolts, screws, nuts, studs, pins, shafts, bushings, and other precision hardware components.
For products with stepped shafts, special head shapes, internal holes, complex grooves, unusual thread structures, or other non-standard features, a 3D model can make the design much easier to understand than a simple two-dimensional drawing.
Our engineers can use the model to evaluate the part geometry and determine whether the product is more suitable for CNC turning, CNC milling, drilling, tapping, thread cutting, thread rolling, cold heading, grinding, or a combination of processes.
Is a 3D CAD model enough for production?
Not always.
A 3D CAD model primarily defines the shape and geometry of the component. It may not contain all the manufacturing and inspection information required for production.
For example, the model may not clearly specify the required material grade, dimensional tolerances, thread tolerance, surface treatment, hardness, mechanical requirements, applicable standards, or special inspection requirements.
This is why a detailed 2D engineering drawing is often recommended for production. The drawing can identify critical dimensions and tolerances and provide technical notes that may not be fully defined in the 3D model.
What information should accompany a 3D model?
When requesting a quotation or production evaluation from HETAI, customers should ideally provide the 3D CAD model together with:
- Material or material grade
- Critical dimensions and tolerances
- Thread type, diameter, pitch, and tolerance
- Surface treatment or finish
- Heat-treatment requirements
- Mechanical or hardness requirements
- Applicable standards
- Required quantity
- Special inspection requirements
- Intended application, when relevant
Providing this information allows HETAI to evaluate the product more accurately and recommend an appropriate manufacturing process.
Can HETAI manufacture complex custom fasteners from CAD data?
Yes. 3D CAD data is particularly useful for custom fasteners with complicated geometries or precision-machined features.
For example, if a customer provides a 3D model of a special bolt with multiple steps, cross holes, internal threads, or complex machined surfaces, our engineers can analyze the geometry and determine the appropriate machining sequence and inspection requirements.
For suitable CNC-machined custom fasteners, HETAI can achieve approximately ±0.005 mm tolerance on applicable features. For precision hardware components processed through grinding, approximately ±0.002 mm may be achievable on suitable features and applications. Actual achievable tolerances depend on the material, geometry, dimensions, manufacturing process, and application requirements.
What if the customer only has a 3D model?
If you only have a 3D CAD model, you can still contact HETAI for technical evaluation and quotation. Our engineers can review the model and communicate with you about any missing specifications before production.
If necessary, HETAI can help identify important technical information that should be confirmed, such as material, thread specifications, tolerances, surface treatment, and inspection requirements.
In short, 3D CAD models can be an excellent starting point for manufacturing custom fasteners, particularly for complex and precision components. For the most accurate quotation and reliable production, however, we recommend providing both the 3D CAD model and a complete 2D engineering drawing, together with the relevant material, quantity, surface-treatment, and technical requirements.
