China’s Machinery Exports Surpass $660 Billion as ‘Three-Transformations’ Strategy Reshapes Global Supply Chains
BEIJING — China’s machinery manufacturing sector has demonstrated robust export momentum this year, continuously serving as an economic “ballast stone” for the country’s foreign trade. According to the latest data released by the China Machinery Industry Federation (CMIF) and reported by CCTV News, machinery exports have now outperformed the growth rate of China’s overall foreign trade for 47 consecutive months.
Strong Momentum Reinforces Role as Trade “Ballast Stone”
In the first seven months of this year, cumulative exports from China’s machinery industry reached $664.3 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 20.8%. This growth rate is 2.3 percentage points higher than China’s overall foreign trade growth. The sector now accounts for 26.3% of the nation’s total merchandise exports, reaffirming its pivotal role in national trade stability. Corporate order volume confirms that growth momentum remains exceptionally strong.
Industry experts point to three core drivers behind this strong export growth:
-
Global Green Infrastructure Demand: The global transition toward low-carbon infrastructure is driving steady demand for heavy-duty, low-carbon equipment across overseas mining operations, port logistics, and renewable energy power projects.
-
Technological Accumulation & Adaptability: Years of domestic research and development are delivering results. Chinese high-end equipment now rivals top-tier international brands while providing greater operational adaptability.
-
Localized Global Operations: Long-term investments in overseas R&D, manufacturing, and service networks are maturing, significantly improving local service capabilities and customer acceptance in international markets.
Structural Optimization and Market Expansion
Unlike earlier export models that relied on high-volume shipments of low-to-mid-end products, China’s machinery exports are undergoing a comprehensive structural transformation. The sector is experiencing accelerated growth across market coverage, industrial structure, and high-value product lines.
Key features of this trade transformation include:
-
Diversified Global Footprint: Chinese machinery products now serve over 230 countries and regions, embedding deeply into international supply chain networks. Notable projects include China Railway Construction Heavy Industry (CRCHI) winning the bid for a cable tunnel project in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, and Shandong Lingong (SDLG) shipping bulk high-end bulldozers to Indonesia and Central Asia.
-
Broad-Based Growth Across Core Sectors: Five major industries—electrical appliances/power equipment, automobiles, general petrochemical machinery, construction machinery, and basic mechanical components—account for over 70% of total export value. All 14 sub-sectors recorded positive year-on-year growth, with 9 exceeding a 10% growth rate. Electrical/power equipment, automotive, and construction machinery have maintained double-digit growth for more than 13 consecutive months.
-
Shift to High-Value Product Segments: Complete vehicle exports surged 56.5% by value, while electric passenger vehicles (EVs) saw export volumes and values jump by more than 70%. High-tech and high-value-added products have become the primary drivers of export growth.
“Three-Transformations” Driving Next-Gen Internationalization
China’s machinery industry is shifting from exporting standalone equipment to delivering complete green solutions, and from competing on price to offering full-lifecycle technical services. This transition represents the global rollout of China’s “new quality productive forces”.
Export competitiveness is now defined by the synergy of high-end, intelligent, and green manufacturing (“Three Transformations”):
-
XCMG delivered the world’s largest hybrid loader in its tonnage class to overseas mining sites, helping clients reduce comprehensive energy costs by over 60%.
-
BYD achieved 789,400 overseas new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in the first half of the year, up approximately 68% year-on-year.
-
Zoomlion reported that overseas revenue now accounts for nearly 60% of its total revenue, with international gross margins surpassing domestic margins as the firm transitions toward turnkey system supply and full-lifecycle operations support.
Analysts note that these milestones demonstrate how China’s machinery sector is reshaping global industrial division of labor, providing greater resilience and stability to global supply chain networks.
